Head of Product Resume Examples and Templates

Why this example works
- Keeps the honest Group Product Manager title and proves head-of-product scope through the ARR, PMs and pricing she already owns.
- The acting Head of Product bullet answers the real question for a first-time leader: has she already run the job?
- Every role shows a business result (payments revenue, churn, contract value), not a list of features shipped.
Applying through an online portal? Use the Word download: it is the same resume in a single-column, ATS-safe layout. Keep this two-column design for emailing and networking.

Best resume format for a head of product
Use a reverse-chronological executive format: headline, summary, core competencies, then each role opening with its scope (team, products, revenue) before 3 to 6 outcome bullets. Group PMs stepping up and startup heads of product fit 1 page; most heads of product, VPs and CPOs need 2.
| Your situation | Format | Length | Lead with |
|---|---|---|---|
| Group product manager stepping up | Reverse-chronological with your real current title | 1 page | Product line owned, PMs led, acting-head work, OKR results |
| Startup head of product (first product hire) | Reverse-chronological | 1 page (2 after 12+ years) | Products launched, customers and ARR, team built, funding stage |
| B2B SaaS head of product | Reverse-chronological executive | 2 pages | Org size, activation, retention, NRR, ARR from launches |
| VP of product | Reverse-chronological executive | 2 pages | Product lines, org size, growth metrics, experimentation scale |
| Chief product officer | Reverse-chronological executive | 2 pages | Portfolio, R&D budget, board and investor work, M&A, revenue growth |
| Head of AI product | Reverse-chronological | 2 pages | AI launches, evaluation and governance, AI revenue and unit economics |
| Engineering, design or consulting leader moving into product | Hybrid: summary and product outcomes first | 1-2 pages | Product decisions owned, customer discovery, launches and pricing |

How to write a head of product resume that gets interviews
A head of product resume is judged on outcomes, not output. Leaders are hired to grow the business through product, so open each role with the scope you lead, then activation, retention and revenue results, not a list of features shipped.
Tie product work to business metrics. Strong product leadership resumes connect the roadmap to activation, retention, conversion and ARR, and show the discovery and experimentation practices that made those results repeatable. Name the products you launched and the growth each one drove, with numbers.
Show leadership and craft together: the organization you built, how you align engineering and go-to-market, and the operating practices you set up. A clean 1 to 2 page format that leads with impact and closes with team and craft reads as a true product leader resume.
What CEOs and recruiters look for in a product leader resume
CEOs and executive recruiters read a product leader resume for scope, judgment and business results. They want to see what you owned, which bets you chose (and stopped), and what changed in the numbers because of your team.
- Scope: products owned, team size by function, customers or users served and revenue influenced
- Business outcomes: activation, retention, net revenue retention, conversion, ARR and margin, with before-and-after figures
- Strategy and tradeoffs: what you prioritized, what you retired and why
- Operating model: planning cadence, OKRs, and the discovery and experimentation practices you introduced
- Org building: PMs, designers and researchers hired, leaders promoted, attrition and team structure
Chief product officer resume: what changes at the C-level
A chief product officer resume shifts from shipping products to running a portfolio. Lead with the CEO reporting line, portfolio size, organization and R&D budget, then show company-level results: revenue growth, retention, platform consolidation and acquisitions.
Add board and investor work, such as product strategy reviews, investor day presentations and M&A diligence, plus how you govern AI and risk. A head of product resume can stay closer to the craft; a CPO resume must read as a business owner’s.
Head of product resume with no head of product title
If you are a group product manager or senior PM stepping up, keep your real title and prove head-of-product scope: the product line you own, the PMs you lead, the revenue it carries and the planning you run with executives.
Add acting-head periods, executive roadmap reviews, hiring and pricing decisions. Engineering, design and consulting leaders moving into product should lead with the product decisions they owned and the customer discovery they ran, not with their old function.
Head of product resume keywords for ATS
Applicant tracking systems and executive recruiters match the language in the job description, so mirror its terms wherever they are true for you. Spell out key acronyms once, such as product-led growth (PLG).
- Strategy: product strategy, product vision, roadmap, portfolio management, go-to-market
- Growth: product-led growth, activation, retention, monetization, pricing and packaging, ARR, NRR
- Practice: product discovery, customer research, experimentation, A/B testing, OKRs, product analytics
- Leadership: product organization, cross-functional leadership, hiring, coaching, executive team, board
- Domain: B2B SaaS, platform, API, marketplace, mobile, AI and machine learning
Head of product resume: what to include vs. what to avoid
| ✓ Include | ✗ Avoid |
|---|---|
| Outcomes over output: activation, retention, conversion, NRR and ARR results in every role | A backlog of features shipped with no business result attached |
| Scope first in each role: products owned, team size by function, customers or users, revenue | Sole credit for team results: say what you led and with whom |
| Roadmap decisions tied to metrics, including what you deprioritized or retired | Buzzwords like visionary, data-driven or customer-obsessed with no proof behind them |
| Named discovery and experimentation practices that made results repeatable | Confidential revenue, customer names or roadmap details covered by an NDA (use percentages or ranges) |
| The product organization you built and how you align engineering, design and go-to-market | Long lists of agile ceremonies and Jira workflows that read like a delivery manager role |
| Pricing, packaging and monetization work with measured results | A title you never held: call yourself Head of Product only if you did the job |
| Board, investor, M&A or annual planning work for VP and CPO roles | Multi-column designs, charts and skill-rating bars that ATS parsers misread |
| A short tools line (analytics, experimentation, roadmap software) for keyword matching | Roles older than about 15 years in full detail: summarize them in 1 or 2 lines |
How to write a head of product resume
- State your scope up front. Write a headline with your current or target title, then a 3 to 4 sentence summary naming your years in product, the team you lead, the products you own and the business you grew. Recruiters judge fit from these first lines.
- Lead each role with scope, then outcomes. Open every role with its scope (team, products, customers, revenue): its own line for your current role, the first bullet for older ones. Add 3 to 6 outcome bullets to the current role, fewer to older ones, naming features only as the way you moved a metric.
- Quantify business impact. Use before-and-after numbers with a timeframe, such as retention up 18 points in a year or CAC payback cut from 19 to 11 months. If figures are confidential, use percentages, multiples or rounded ranges instead.
- Show how you work. Name the practices behind your results: discovery cadence, experimentation program, OKRs, planning process and pricing research. This proves your wins are repeatable, which is what a CEO is buying in a head of product.
- Prove you build teams. Include the product organization you built: PMs, designers and researchers hired, leaders promoted, attrition and how you structured teams. Add how you align engineering, sales, marketing and customer success around one roadmap.
- Match the level and company stage. Startups want hands-on discovery and 0-to-1 launches; scale-ups want growth systems and org building; CPO searches want portfolio, R&D budget, board and M&A work. Mirror the job description’s title and stage in your summary.
- Check format and ATS fit. Use a single-column, reverse-chronological layout with standard headings, keep it to 1 or 2 pages, save it as PDF or DOCX as requested, and run it through an ATS checker to confirm keywords and sections parse cleanly.
Cover letter tip for a head of product
Open with the company’s stage and the product problem the role must solve, such as stalled activation or a fragmented portfolio, then give one result proving you have solved it before. Name the team you would build and your first-90-day priorities, and ask to meet the CEO and engineering leader.
