Why this example works
- Proves VP readiness with plan-level results, a capacity model and manager coaching instead of personal quota, the gap first-time VPs must close.
- Shows promotion inside one company from regional manager to director, a strong signal that leadership trusted her with a bigger number.
- Names the next role in the summary, so recruiters read a deliberate step up rather than a director applying above her level.
Why this example works
- Opens with ARR growth, quota by year and team size, the three numbers CROs and CEOs check before reading anything else.
- Separates personal selling from leadership results, showing the move from top rep to builder of two sales organizations.
- Adds efficiency metrics (CAC payback, net revenue retention) that boards now weigh as heavily as raw growth.

Why this example works
- Shows the zero-to-one arc (first hire, first process, first managers) that startup CEOs and investors screen VP candidates for.

| Sitting VP of Sales, 12+ years | Reverse-chronological executive | 2 pages | Revenue or ARR grown, attainment by year, organization size |
| Enterprise or public company VP | Reverse-chronological executive | 2 pages | Bookings target, span of control, forecast accuracy, strategic accounts |
| Startup VP or founding sales leader | Reverse-chronological | 1-2 pages | First hires, playbook, ARR by funding stage, pricing work |

How to write a VP of sales resume that gets interviews
A VP of sales resume lives and dies on the number. Recruiters, CROs and CEOs want quota attainment, revenue or ARR grown and the teams you built, so open with an executive summary and revenue results rather than a list of responsibilities.
Quantify everything. State revenue grown and over what period, attainment by year, average deal size and how it moved, and the size of the organization you led. Ramp time, win rate and forecast accuracy prove your results are repeatable, not one lucky year.
Show that you build, not just sell. The move from top rep to sales leader is proven by the managers you hired and promoted, the process and enablement you installed, and the forecast rhythm you ran with finance.
Keep most VP resumes to 2 clean pages and make your scope obvious at the top of each role: team size, segment or region, and the number you carried.
What CEOs and recruiters look for on a vice president of sales resume
Hiring CEOs, boards and executive recruiters read a vice president of sales resume for scale, repeatability and fit with their stage. They check the size of the number you carried, your attainment trend, the team you built and whether you have sold to their buyer before.
- Scale: bookings or revenue target, team size, number of managers and segments covered
- Repeatability: attainment by year, share of reps at quota, forecast accuracy and ramp time
- Efficiency: CAC payback, win rate, sales cycle length and cost of sales
- Stage fit: startup, growth stage, private equity-backed or public company experience
- Retention: net revenue retention, renewals and expansion where sales owns them
- Leadership: managers promoted, rep turnover and the methodology you installed
VP of sales bio sample
A VP of sales bio is a 3 to 5 sentence, third-person version of your resume summary for LinkedIn, conference programs, board decks and company websites. Lead with your current role and scope, add two career results, then close with how you lead or what you advise on.
Sample bio: James Whitaker is Vice President of Sales at Brindlecrest Software, where he leads a 60-person team across enterprise, mid-market and partnerships. In 17 years of B2B SaaS sales he has built two sales organizations from launch to scale and helped triple the company’s recurring revenue.
A five-time President’s Club honoree, James advises early-stage founders on first sales hires and pricing. He holds a business degree in marketing from the University of Colorado Boulder.
Keep a 50-word version for speaker introductions and a first-person version for your LinkedIn About section, and update both whenever your scope changes.

VP of sales resume: what to include vs. what to avoid
| ✓ Include | ✗ Avoid |
|---|---|
| Quota attainment by year and the size of the number you carried (bookings, ARR or revenue) | Duty lists such as ‘responsible for managing the sales team’ with no numbers |
| Team scope in each role: managers, reps, segments, regions and channels | Personal closing stats only, with no team or organization results |
| Proof your results repeat: deal size trend, win rate, ramp time and forecast accuracy | Revenue figures with no time frame or starting point |
| Teams built and led: hires, promotions, turnover and the structure you created | Confidential customer names, pricing or pipeline covered by an NDA |
| The process you installed: a named methodology, forecast rhythm and enablement program | Every sales award since your first year as a rep |
| Efficiency metrics boards track: CAC payback, sales cycle and net revenue retention | Labels like ‘rainmaker’, ‘hunter’ or ‘results-driven’ with no evidence |
| Company context in a few words: stage, ownership (PE-backed, public) and what you sell | Long tool lists that crowd out results (name the CRM and 3 to 5 key tools) |
| President’s Club and other recognition, listed once with years | Photos, graphics and text boxes, which ATS parsers misread when you apply online |
How to write a VP of sales resume
- Lead with scope and the number. Open with a 3 to 4 sentence executive summary: years in sales, years leading teams, what you sell and to whom, and the team and number you own today. If you are stepping up, name the VP role you want.
- Add a core skills section. List 8 to 10 skills on a 1-page resume and 10 to 14 on 2 pages, matched to the posting: revenue growth, pipeline and forecasting, territory and capacity planning, your methodology, hiring and compensation design. Keep them in a clearly labeled skills section so recruiters and ATS scans find them fast.
- Put scope in every role. Open each role with your scope: team size, segments or regions and the target you carried. Give company context (stage, ownership, what you sell) in your summary or beside the employer name, so readers can compare your scale with their opening.
- Quantify results by year. Show attainment by year, revenue or ARR grown with start and end points, deal size movement and forecast accuracy. Year-by-year numbers prove your results repeat, which matters more than a single record quarter.
- Prove you build teams. Add bullets on managers hired and promoted, rep turnover, ramp time and the share of reps at quota. These show a CEO you can scale a sales organization, not only close deals yourself.
- Show your operating system. Name the methodology, forecast cadence, enablement program and tools you installed, plus your work with marketing, product and finance on pipeline, pricing and capacity. This is what separates a VP from a strong sales director.
- Finish with recognition and check fit. Close with President’s Club, board or advisory roles and speaking, each listed once. Keep most VP resumes to 2 pages and run the file through an ATS checker before you send it to a recruiter or apply online.
