How to write a CV for UK employers

A strong UK CV is short, specific and easy to scan. Lead with a personal profile that names your target role and your strongest evidence, then show your employment history newest first with results, not duties.

Match the wording of the job advert or person specification, because many UK employers, the NHS and large retailers screen applications online. When you want an expert to do it for you, our CV writing service starts at £129, or get a free CV review first.

UK CV FAQ

What should a UK CV include?
A UK CV includes your name and contact details, a short personal profile, key skills, employment history in reverse chronological order, and education and qualifications. Add training, volunteering or languages when they support the role. Leave out a photo, date of birth, marital status and full address.
How long should a CV be in the UK?
Two sides of A4 is the UK standard for most experienced candidates. Students, school leavers and people early in their careers can often fit everything on one page. Senior and academic CVs sometimes run longer, but every line should earn its place.
What is the difference between a CV and a resume?
In the UK a CV is the standard document for job applications, usually two pages and led by a personal profile. Americans call a similar document a resume, which is often one page. Academic CVs are longer in both countries.
Should I put a photo on my CV in the UK?
No. UK employers do not expect a photo, and leaving it off avoids any risk of bias in shortlisting. The same applies to your date of birth, age, marital status and nationality. Your town or city is enough for location.
Do I need to include references on my CV?
Usually not. Most UK employers ask for referees after an interview or offer, so you can leave references off or write “References available on request”. Never list referees’ contact details without their permission.
Are these CV templates free to download?
Yes. Every example on these pages comes with a free single-column Word template sized for A4, so you can replace the sample content with your own. The single-column layout reads cleanly in the applicant tracking systems many UK employers use.
