Use a reverse-chronological, single-column finance resume with credentials and tools near the top. Students, analysts and investment bankers fit on 1 page. Finance managers with 8+ years use 1-2 pages (2 when they own a planning process, team or systems projects); directors use 2.

| Financial or treasury analyst (2-7 years) | Reverse-chronological | 1 page | Modeling and forecasting results, systems such as Kyriba, SAP or Power BI |
| Investment banking or private equity | Reverse-chronological with a selected transactions list | 1 page, always | Licenses, closed deal count, deal types and sizes |

| Accountant moving into finance | Hybrid: summary and analytical projects first | 1 page | CPA, forecasting or modeling projects, business partnering |

How to write a finance resume that gets interviews
A finance resume gets interviews when it proves your analysis changed a decision. Recruiters look for core competencies (FP&A, financial modeling, forecasting, valuation, treasury or credit), backed by tools, credentials and quantified results.
Open with a focused summary and a skills band covering Excel, SQL, financial modeling and the platforms you use, such as SAP, Oracle, Bloomberg or Kyriba. Then write results-driven bullets for each role, newest first.
Tailor the resume to your seniority and track. A financial analyst emphasizes modeling, variance analysis, reporting and Excel depth. A finance manager or director foregrounds budget ownership, business partnering, team leadership and strategic planning.
Make every bullet quantified evidence, not a task list: forecast accuracy improved, working capital freed, costs or bad debt reduced, margin lifted, close or reporting cycles shortened. Tie each number to the business decision it supported.
Entry-level finance resume with no experience
An entry-level finance resume with no full-time experience should lead with your degree, GPA (if 3.5 or higher), finance internships and any exam you have passed, such as the SIE. Treat internships and part-time jobs like real roles with quantified bullets.
No finance internship yet? Use class projects and case competitions: a DCF valuation, a budget model for a student organization or a stock pitch for an investment club. Bank teller, bookkeeping and campus treasurer roles all show cash accuracy and trust.
Name the role you want in your summary, for example financial analyst, credit analyst or finance rotational program, and keep the resume to 1 page.
What finance hiring managers look for on a resume
Finance hiring managers scan for proof you can be trusted with numbers that drive decisions: accurate models, clear communication with non-finance leaders, current tools and credentials that match the track.
- Track match: FP&A, treasury, corporate finance, banking, credit or investment banking named clearly
- Accuracy: forecast variance, close timelines, audit results and error-free reporting
- Impact: cash freed, costs cut, margin improved, deals closed or losses avoided
- Tools: Excel depth, SQL, BI dashboards and the ERP or EPM system named in the posting
- Judgment and discretion: handling confidential figures and presenting trade-offs to executives
Finance resume keywords to include for ATS
Applicant tracking systems match the exact terms in a finance job posting, so mirror its job title, systems and credentials wherever they are true for you. Spell out each credential once, such as Certified Treasury Professional (CTP).
- Planning: FP&A, budgeting, forecasting, rolling forecast, variance analysis, annual operating plan
- Analysis: financial modeling, valuation, DCF, scenario analysis, capital budgeting, KPI reporting
- Treasury and credit: cash management, liquidity, FX hedging, credit analysis, DSO, collections
- Reporting and controls: month-end close, GAAP, SOX, management reporting, board reporting
- Systems: Excel, SQL, Power BI, Tableau, SAP, Oracle, Hyperion, Bloomberg, Kyriba
Finance resume: what to include vs. what to avoid
| ✓ Include | ✗ Avoid |
|---|---|
| FP&A, modeling, forecasting, treasury or credit experience matched to the posting | Vague duties like “handled finances” or “responsible for budgets” |
| Quantified outcomes: forecast accuracy, cash freed, cost, margin, DSO or deal value | Listing tools without showing results you achieved with them |
| Credentials with the issuing body (CFA, CPA, FPAC, CTP, FMVA, MBA), including candidacy | Confidential figures, client names or non-public deal details |
| Tools: Excel, SQL, SAP, Oracle, Bloomberg, Power BI and your treasury or EPM system | Generic skills with no quantified proof |
| Scope for each role: revenue base, budget size, account count or team size | Partial or implied credentials such as “CFA, Level II” (write “Level II candidate in the CFA Program”, or “Passed Level II of the CFA Program” once you are not registered for the next exam) |
| Securities licenses for investment banking roles (SIE, Series 79, Series 63) with the year passed | Every Excel function you know instead of the analysis you built with them |
| Business partnering: decisions your analysis informed for operations, sales or the board | Multi-column templates, charts or text boxes that ATS parsers misread |
| A selected transactions list for investment banking and corporate development roles | Photos, date of birth or Social Security number |
How to write a finance resume
- Open with a focused finance summary. State your track (FP&A, corporate finance, treasury, banking, credit or investment banking), your years of experience, the scale you work at and one headline result, so reviewers place you instantly.
- Add a credentials and tools band. List CFA, CPA, CTP, FPAC, FMVA or MBA with the issuing body, plus Excel, SQL, BI tools and ERP or EPM platforms, so ATS systems and recruiters match you quickly. Show candidacy the way CFA Institute allows, such as “Level II candidate in the CFA Program”.
- Give each role its scope. Under every employer, add the numbers that size the job: revenue base, budget or portfolio managed, bank accounts, deal sizes or team size. Scope tells the reader what level of responsibility to expect.
- Quantify your financial impact. Show impact with numbers, for example “Improved forecast accuracy from 85% to 96%” or “Reduced working capital by $5M through cash-flow optimization.” Before-and-after figures are the most persuasive.
- Connect analysis to decisions. Frame bullets around the business outcome your analysis drove, such as a cost cut, an investment approved, a price change or a loan structured, not just the task you completed.
- Tailor and check for ATS. Mirror the posting’s job title, systems and credentials, keep a single-column reverse-chronological layout, and run your finance resume through an ATS checker before you apply.
