Best CV format for a accountant

Use a single-column, reverse-chronological accountant CV: personal profile, key skills, employment history, then qualifications. Put your qualification status near the top. School leavers, trainees and AAT-qualified accountants with under five years fit one side of A4; chartered accountants and anyone with five or more years usually need two.

How to write an accountant CV that gets interviews

An accountant CV gets interviews when it shows your qualification status, the systems you use and the results you deliver. Finance managers and recruiters skim, so put your strongest evidence in the personal profile and the first bullet of each role.

Give scale and numbers: entities closed, invoices processed, clients managed, close days cut or tax saved. ‘Cut month-end close from eight days to five’ beats ‘responsible for month-end’. Name the setting too, such as practice, industry or the public sector, because duties and keywords differ.

Job titles vary. England’s National Careers Service lists chartered management accountant as another title for a management accountant, and entry adverts mix accounts assistant, assistant accountant and finance assistant. Use the exact title from the advert under your name.

Accountant CV with no experience

You can write a strong trainee or graduate accountant CV with no experience by leading with qualifications, numeracy and any work involving money or records. Open with a personal profile naming the route you want, such as an AAT apprenticeship or a graduate ACA or ACCA training role.

In England, the National Careers Service lists apprenticeships including Assistant Accountant Level 3 and Professional Accounting or Taxation Technician Level 4, plus college routes such as the T Level in Accounting. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland run their own apprenticeship programmes.

Turn part-time jobs into evidence: cash-ups balanced, stock counted, refunds logged. Society treasurer posts, internships and spring weeks deserve full entries with numbers. Career changers from retail, hospitality or operations should lead with budgets, payroll hours, supplier invoices or stock results, plus any AAT study in progress.

How to show AAT, ACCA, CIMA or ACA status on your CV

State your qualification status precisely, because recruiters filter on it. Give the body, the level or exams passed and the date, such as ‘CIMA Management level complete’ or ‘MAAT, 2025’, rather than a vague ‘part-qualified’.

Know what each route involves. ICAEW’s ACA has 15 exam modules and at least 450 days of practical work experience. ACCA currently has 13 exams, an ethics module and 36 months of relevant experience, and is renaming and restructuring its levels from 2027.

CIMA’s CGMA route runs through Operational, Management and Strategic levels with at least three years of relevant experience. AAT replaced its Level 4 Diploma in Professional Accounting with the Level 4 Diploma for Professional Accounting Technicians in September 2026, so copy the exact title from your certificate.

Many adverts ask for CCAB-qualified accountants, meaning members of ICAEW, ACCA, CIPFA, ICAS or Chartered Accountants Ireland. CIMA is not a CCAB member, so check the advert’s wording before applying.

Keywords to include on an accountant CV

Include the exact systems, standards and tasks named in the advert, because many UK employers and recruitment agencies screen CVs with applicant tracking systems. Work keywords naturally into your skills and bullets rather than pasting a list, and keep rule references current.

How to write an accountant CV

  1. Read the advert and job description. Highlight the qualifications, systems and tasks the employer asks for, such as ‘part-qualified ACCA’, ‘Sage 200’ or ‘month-end close’. These are your keywords, and they show which experience to lead with on your accountant CV.
  2. Write a personal profile. In 3-5 lines, state your qualification status, years of experience, setting (practice, industry or public sector), two or three systems and the role you want. Add one result, such as a faster close or a clean audit.
  3. Add a key skills section. List 8-12 skills that match the advert, mixing technical tasks such as reconciliations, VAT and management accounts with software such as Xero, Sage or SAP. Keep each item short so it scans in seconds.
  4. List your employment history with numbers. Work backwards from your current role. Give recent jobs 4-5 bullets that start with an action verb and include a figure where you can: entities, clients, invoices, close days, savings or debtor days. Older roles need one or two bullets.
  5. Show qualifications precisely. Put professional qualifications first, with the body, level or exams passed and dates, then your degree with its classification and summarised school results. Add apprenticeships, AAT units in progress and relevant CPD, such as FRS 102 update training.
  6. Check every figure and save correctly. Proofread numbers and dates line by line, because one error on an accountant CV undermines the whole application. Save as Word or PDF as the advert asks, with a file name such as ‘Firstname-Surname-CV’.

Accountant CV FAQ

How long should an accountant CV be?
An accountant CV should be one side of A4 for school leavers, graduates, trainees and AAT-qualified accountants with under five years in finance. Use two sides once you are fully qualified with ICAEW, ACCA, CIMA, ICAS, CAI or CIPFA, or have five or more years in finance. Give the last ten years the most detail and summarise older roles in a line or two.
What should I put in a personal statement for an accountant CV?
Your personal statement, or personal profile, should give your qualification status, experience, sector and target role in 3-5 lines, plus one result. For example: ‘Part-qualified ACCA assistant accountant with three years in manufacturing, running month-end and VAT in Sage 200, seeking a management accountant role with exam support.’
How do I write an accountant CV with no experience?
Lead with qualifications and evidence of accuracy with money: A-levels or a degree, AAT units, internships, treasurer posts and part-time jobs involving cash or stock. Open with a personal profile naming the route you want, such as an AAT apprenticeship or graduate ACA or ACCA training, and give each role at least one number.
What skills should I put on an accountant CV?
Put the advert’s technical skills first: reconciliations, month-end close, VAT, management accounts, budgeting and the software named. England’s National Careers Service also lists attention to detail, analytical thinking, maths, teamwork and excellent verbal communication for management accountants. Prove each skill with an example in your employment history.
What qualifications do I need to be an accountant in the UK?
Most accountants qualify through a professional body: AAT for technician roles, then ACCA, CIMA, ICAEW (ACA), ICAS (CA), Chartered Accountants Ireland (CAI, common in Northern Ireland) or CIPFA. You can start after A-levels, a degree or an apprenticeship. In England, apprenticeships include Assistant Accountant Level 3 and Professional Accounting or Taxation Technician Level 4.
How do I show part-qualified ACCA or CIMA status on my CV?
Show the body, the exams or level passed and your expected finish, for example ‘ACCA: 9 of 13 exams passed’ or ‘CIMA: Management level complete’. Put it in your personal profile and qualifications section. ACCA is restructuring its levels from 2027, so name the exams you passed as well as the level.
Do I need a cover letter for an accountant job?
Yes, send a covering letter unless the advert says not to, even through a recruitment agency. Keep it to one page: name the role, match two or three requirements with examples such as a faster close or a VAT backlog cleared, and confirm your qualification status and notice period. Some public sector roles ask for a supporting statement instead.
Should I put references on my accountant CV?
No, you do not need to name referees on a UK accountant CV. Employers usually request references after an offer, so leave them off or write ‘References available on request’. Financial services employers may also run background checks, so make sure your employment dates match your records exactly.
What is the difference between an assistant accountant CV and a management accountant CV?
An assistant accountant CV shows accurate processing, while a management accountant CV shows insight that changes decisions. The first covers ledgers, reconciliations, journals and VAT; the second covers budgets, forecasts, costing, variance analysis and business partnering. Both are reverse-chronological, but a management accountant CV leads with the decisions your numbers influenced.
What does CCAB-qualified mean on an accountancy job advert?
CCAB-qualified means you are a member of a body in the Consultative Committee of Accountancy Bodies: ICAEW, ACCA, CIPFA, ICAS or Chartered Accountants Ireland. CIMA is not a CCAB member, so CIMA accountants should check whether the employer accepts their qualification. Write your designatory letters, such as ACA, ACCA or CA, after your name.
