- Assembled a 3,100-county QCEW and QWI panel spanning 2001-2023 for a faculty study of employer wage-setting power.
- Rewrote the project’s Stata and Python data pipeline, cutting the quarterly refresh from 3 days to 4 hours with documented, version-controlled code.
- Estimated staggered difference-in-differences and event-study models of 140 state minimum-wage increases using heterogeneity-robust estimators and wild-bootstrap inference.
- Produced the data appendix and 12 robustness tables, turning around coauthor and referee requests within 2 weeks.
- Prepared the replication package for a faculty paper, which passed the journal data editor’s reproducibility check on first submission.
Job Market Paper
“Minimum Wages and Job Reallocation Across Firms.” Using confidential Census Bureau linked employer-employee data (LEHD), I show that state minimum-wage increases from 2003-2023 shift employment toward higher-paying, more productive firms. A 10% increase raises the employment share of the top-paying third of firms by about 1 percentage point, while net county employment falls by less than half a percent. Reallocation is strongest in commuting zones where a few employers dominate low-wage hiring, consistent with employer wage-setting power.

Best resume format for a phd candidate
Use an academic CV for faculty, postdoc and fellowship applications: degree, dissertation and research up front, then publications, presentations, teaching and references, usually 2 to 3 pages for a PhD candidate. For industry, convert it into a 1-page reverse-chronological resume built around skills and results.
| Your situation | Format | Length | Lead with |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early PhD student (fellowships, summer schools) | Short academic CV | 1-2 pages | Education, research interests, posters, methods |
| PhD student applying for internships | Reverse-chronological resume | 1 page | Research projects with metrics, tools, one publications section |
| Academic job market candidate | Academic CV | 2-3 pages | Education, dissertation and chair, job market paper, references |
| STEM postdoc applications | Academic CV | 2-3 pages | Profile naming papers and fellowship, then research and techniques |
| Teaching-focused colleges | Academic CV with teaching up front | 2-3 pages | Courses taught, role, modality, evaluations |
| Industry, government or nonprofit roles | Reverse-chronological or hybrid resume | 1 page (2 with prior work experience) | Summary, skills, research rewritten as results |

How to write a PhD candidate CV for the academic job market
A PhD candidate CV must show you are becoming an independent scholar. Put the degree, expected date and dissertation at the top, then research, publications and working papers, conference talks and teaching. Most fields end with references; economics job market CVs often list them on page 1.
Show momentum, not coursework. Name your dissertation, field and committee chair, and give every paper an honest status: job market paper, in preparation, under review, revise and resubmit, or published. Clearly labeled work in progress proves your research is real and moving before the degree is finished.
Keep it to 2 or 3 pages at this stage, in one consistent citation style. Coursework, high school honors and minor talks can go; your job market paper, data and methods, funding and teaching evidence should stay.
PhD candidate resume for industry jobs
A PhD candidate resume for industry is 1 page, 2 at most, and opens with a summary and skills instead of education. Translate the dissertation into what a company buys: methods, tools, scale, deadlines and results.
Rewrite each research role like a job. ‘Studied voter turnout’ becomes ‘Analyzed 4 million voter records in R and SQL to forecast turnout within 2 points.’ Compress publications into one line, and keep a separate academic CV for scholarly applications.
What search committees look for on a PhD candidate CV
Search committees and postdoc PIs read a PhD candidate CV for evidence that you will finish on time, publish independently and teach well. Every section should answer one of those three questions.
- A defined research agenda: dissertation title, fields and a job market paper or lead project
- Publication momentum, with honest status labels and your authorship position clear
- Funding: fellowships, grants and travel awards, even small ones
- Teaching evidence: courses, your role, modality, enrollment and evaluations
- Visibility: conference talks, invited seminars and peer review
- References from your chair and committee who know your work
PhD student CV with no publications yet
A PhD student CV with no publications can still look strong. List posters, working papers and manuscripts in preparation (only when a draft exists), and describe your dissertation or lead project in 2 to 3 lines.
Fill the rest with research experience, methods, awards, teaching and service. Nobody expects a long publication list before candidacy, so a first or second year student applying for fellowships can use 1 to 2 pages.

PhD candidate CV: what to include vs. what to avoid
| ✓ Include | ✗ Avoid |
|---|---|
| Expected degree date and candidacy status, for example ‘Ph.D. Candidate, expected May 2027’ | ‘Ph.D.’ after your name before the degree is conferred |
| Dissertation title, fields and committee chair | Manuscripts listed as ‘forthcoming’ or ‘under review’ when they are not |
| Publications and working papers with honest status labels and authorship order | Undergraduate coursework and high school awards once you are in candidacy |
| Conference presentations, invited talks and posters with the year | Padding such as every journal club, lab meeting talk and minor committee |
| Fellowships, grants, travel awards and teaching awards | A vague or missing completion date |
| Teaching: courses, your role (TA or instructor of record), enrollment and evaluations | Age, marital status or a photo on applications for US positions |
| Research methods, lab techniques, software and languages | An industry resume that reads like a CV: long publication lists and jargon |
| References on academic CVs: 3 to 4 letter writers, starting with your chair | Inconsistent citation formats across sections |
How to write a PhD candidate CV
- Set up the header and status. Put your name, title (Ph.D. Candidate in your field), university email, phone and a LinkedIn, ORCID or website link. State the expected completion month and year so committees know when you can start.
- Put the degree and dissertation up front. List the Ph.D. with its expected date, dissertation title and committee chair in your education section, and name the dissertation focus in your opening profile so readers place your research in seconds.
- List research output with status. Separate publications, working papers and work in progress. Use one citation style, keep your authorship position visible and label each item honestly: in preparation, under review, revise and resubmit, accepted or published.
- Show teaching and mentoring. Name each course, your role, term, enrollment and modality, then add evaluations or a teaching certificate. Mentoring undergraduates and running workshops count, especially for teaching-focused colleges.
- Add funding, talks and service. List fellowships, grants and travel awards with the funder and years, then conference presentations and invited talks. Keep service selective: peer review, organizing a seminar series and department committees.
- Close with skills and references. Add methods, software, lab techniques and languages, then 3 to 4 references with titles and departments, starting with your chair (economics CVs often list them on page 1). Confirm each writer has agreed to send a letter before you list them.
- Make an industry version. For non-academic roles, cut to a 1-page resume: summary, skills, research roles rewritten as results and a single publications line. Run it through an ATS checker against the posting before you apply.

Cover letter tip for a phd candidate
For academic jobs, open with your field, dissertation and expected completion date, summarize your job market paper or lead project’s contribution in 2 to 3 sentences, then show teaching fit for that department. For industry, skip the dissertation history: name the problem the team solves and one research result that proves you can solve it.
