Friendly, organised sixth form leaver with a year of Saturday volunteering in a busy charity shop: serving at the till, pricing donations and dressing the window. Employment History
Volunteer Shop Assistant, Hearthstone Youth Trust charity shop, Bradford Sep 2025 – Present
- Serve 60+ customers each Saturday on a cash and card till, balancing the float to the penny at close.
- Sort, steam, price and tag around 150 donated items a shift, rotating unsold stock every two weeks to keep rails fresh.
- Signed up 140 donors to Retail Gift Aid in a year, so the charity can claim Gift Aid on their sales.
- Dress the front window monthly around seasonal themes, including a back-to-school display that sold out its uniform rail in a week.
Work Experience Placement, Mayfield & Oak Homeware, Bradford Jul 2025
- Completed a two-week Year 12 placement on the shop floor of a 20-person homeware store during the summer sale.
- Replenished shelves from deliveries to the planogram and printed shelf-edge labels with a hand-held scanner.
- Shadowed the till team, learning refunds, exchanges and the Challenge 25 checks the store uses for knives.
Sales Lead, Young Enterprise Company Programme, Student company (school team), Bradford Oct 2024 – May 2025
- Led sales for a student company selling upcycled tote bags at four selling events, taking £410 in cash and card.
- Tracked stock and takings in an Excel sheet and presented the year-end results to a panel of local business judges.

Why this example works

- States full availability, including weekends and bank holidays, which answers the first question a store manager asks about rotas.
- Mentions Challenge 25 from work experience, a keyword that signals she understands age-restricted sales before her first shift.

- Served a queue-heavy Saturday counter, boxing cakes and bread to order and taking cash and card payments at a steady pace.
- Helped relabel pre-packed sandwiches with full ingredient lists and bold allergens ahead of Natasha’s Law coming into force in October 2021.

8 GCSEs grades 9-4 including English (5) and Maths (6), 2019
Highfield Level 2 Award in Food Safety for Retail, 2023
Key Skills
Self-checkout supervision · Till balancing · Challenge 25 checks · Online grocery picking · Date code checks · Bakery counter service · Allergen awareness · Click and Collect
Why this example works
- Uses supermarket-specific tasks (self-checkout, online picking, date code checks) that mirror the wording of grocery job adverts.
- Shows progression from Christmas temp to permanent, a simple and credible signal of reliability for retail managers.
- Quantifies routine work, such as pick accuracy and waste reduction, instead of listing duties.
Why this example works
- Leads with fashion-specific results, such as styling-led sales and loyalty sign-ups, rather than generic till duties.
- Gives store size and regional ranking, so a hiring manager can picture the scale of the visual merchandising and sales work.
- Lists conversational Welsh, a real advantage when serving customers and applying to retailers in Wales.
Why this example works
- Names the career break honestly as a dated entry and fills it with volunteering that uses real retail skills.
- Puts availability in the profile, because part-time rotas built around school hours decide many returner applications.
- Opens with a recent Christmas role, reassuring employers that her till and customer skills are current.

Best CV format for a retail assistant
Use a reverse-chronological retail assistant CV in a single column: personal profile, key skills, employment history, then education. Most retail assistants fit on one side of A4; senior assistants and key holders can use two. Leave off a photo, date of birth and full address.
| Your situation | Format | Length | Lead with |
|---|---|---|---|
| No experience or school leaver | Skills-led: profile, skills, volunteering, work experience | 1 page | Availability, GCSEs, volunteering and school achievements |
| Student (part-time or weekends) | Reverse-chronological | 1 page | Term-time and holiday availability, any customer-facing work |
| Experienced retail assistant | Reverse-chronological | 1 page (2 if you have 5+ roles) | Store type, tills, stock tasks and measurable results |
| Career returner | Reverse-chronological with a dated career break | 1 page | Recent work or volunteering, availability, past retail roles |
| Career changer into retail | Hybrid: profile and transferable skills first | 1 page | Customer-facing skills from hospitality, care or admin |
| Senior assistant or key holder | Reverse-chronological | 2 pages | Key holding, cash office, shift leadership, personal licence if held |
Every example above follows these rules, on A4 and without a photo, date of birth or full address.
How to write a retail assistant CV that gets interviews
A retail assistant CV gets interviews when it shows you serve customers well, keep stock and cash accurate, and turn up reliably for your shifts. Store managers skim quickly, so put your strongest evidence in the personal profile and the first bullet of each role.
Name the store type and scale: supermarket, fashion, convenience or DIY. Then add numbers, such as customers served a shift, till balances, loyalty sign-ups, pick accuracy or waste cut. ‘Balanced a cash and card till with no variances for 12 months’ beats ‘responsible for cash handling’.
State your availability clearly. The National Careers Service says sales assistants may work evenings, weekends and bank holidays on a rota, so a line such as ‘Available weekends and two weekday evenings’ answers a manager’s first question before they ask it.
Job titles vary by employer. Sales assistant, shop assistant, customer assistant and retail sales advisor describe the same core job, so the advice here works for a sales assistant CV too. Use the exact title from the advert under your name.
Retail assistant CV with no experience
You can write a strong retail assistant CV with no experience by treating volunteering, work experience and school responsibilities as evidence. The National Careers Service lists volunteering and applying directly as routes in, and says retail experience is helpful but not essential.
Lead with a personal profile that names the job you want and your availability. Then list a charity shop shift, a work experience week, a Young Enterprise student company, a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award or a school fair, each with one concrete result.
If you are 16 or 17, aim for weekend and holiday roles. In England, Wales and Scotland, under-18s can only sell alcohol when a responsible person aged 18 or over approves each sale, so show that you understand ID checks and store policy.
Keywords to include in a retail assistant CV
Large UK retailers take applications online, and many screen them with applicant tracking systems before a manager reads them. Mirror the exact words in the job advert, such as ‘customer assistant’, ‘replenishment’ or ‘Click and Collect’, and use them naturally in your skills and bullets.
- Customer service, customer experience, product knowledge
- Till operation, cash handling, refunds and exchanges
- Replenishment, stock rotation, date code checks, planograms
- Challenge 25, age-restricted sales, refusals log
- Visual merchandising, promotions, seasonal displays
- Online orders, picking, Click and Collect
- Loss prevention, health and safety, key holder
How to show Challenge 25 and age-restricted sales on your CV
Show Challenge 25 by listing ‘Challenge 25 age checks’ as a key skill and proving it in one bullet: refusals logged, test purchases passed or new starters trained. Managers in convenience stores and supermarkets look for both.
Challenge 25 is the Retail of Alcohol Standards Group scheme where staff ask anyone who looks under 25 for ID before selling alcohol, and often other age-restricted products. In England, Wales and Scotland, premises selling alcohol must have an age verification policy as a mandatory licensing condition.
In England and Wales (Licensing Act 2003), list a personal licence if you hold one, because a personal licence holder can authorise other staff to sell alcohol. In Scotland the personal licence qualification is the SCPLH; Northern Ireland has no personal licence system.
Returning to retail or changing career
Returning after a career break? Give the gap a dated line, such as ‘Career break (parent), 2019 – 2025’, and add any volunteering or courses from that time. Recent work, even a Christmas temp role, shows employers your till and customer skills are current.
Career changers from hospitality, care or admin already have the core skills: customer service, cash handling, working to standards and staying calm under pressure. Use a hybrid layout that puts those transferable skills first, then your employment history.
What to include and leave off a UK retail assistant CV
| ✓ Include | ✗ Avoid |
|---|---|
| A 3-5 line personal profile naming the store type and the job you want | A photo, date of birth, age, marital status or nationality |
| Your availability: weekends, evenings, bank holidays and notice period | Your full home address or National Insurance number |
| Till, cash handling and refunds experience, with accuracy results | Duty lists copied from the job advert with no results |
| Stock tasks: replenishment, rotation, date code checks and deliveries | An ‘objective’ in place of a personal profile |
| Challenge 25 and age-restricted sales experience or training | Referees’ names and phone numbers |
| Measurable results: sign-ups, sales targets, pick accuracy, waste cut | Clichés such as ‘hard-working team player’ with no evidence |
| GCSEs in one line, plus apprenticeships and short courses such as food safety | Tables, text boxes and graphics that applicant tracking systems misread |
| Volunteering and work experience if you are new to retail | Every school grade in full when a one-line GCSE summary will do |
How to write a retail assistant CV
- Read the job advert closely. Highlight the store type, the shift pattern and the skills the advert repeats, such as customer service, tills or replenishment. Those words become your CV keywords, and the shift pattern tells you what availability to state.
- Write a personal profile. In three to five lines, say who you are, the retail experience or transferable skills you bring, one result and the role you want. Add your availability if the job runs on a rota of weekends and evenings.
- List your key skills. Choose 8 to 12 skills that match the advert, mixing hard skills like till operation, stock rotation and Challenge 25 with soft skills like patience and teamwork. Keep each one short so it scans in seconds.
- Show results in your employment history. List roles newest first with job title, employer, town and dates. Give each role three to five bullets that start with an action verb and include a number: customers served, sign-ups, accuracy or waste reduced.
- Add education and training. Summarise GCSEs in one line, then list A-levels, BTECs, apprenticeships and short courses such as food safety or first aid. School leavers can put education above employment when it is their strongest section.
- Check length, layout and spelling. Keep to one side of A4 unless you have several years of experience or key holder duties. Use a single column, a clear font and UK spelling, then save as Word or PDF, whichever the application asks for.
Retail Assistant salary in the UK
National averages for England. Use them to benchmark offers, not as a promise for any single job.
The National Careers Service puts average pay for a sales assistant at £19,000 a year for new starters, rising to around £27,000 with experience. Typical hours are 37 to 42 a week, with evenings, weekends, bank holidays on a rota.

Covering letter tip for a retail assistant
Open your covering letter by naming the store and the role, then give one example that proves you suit it, such as a busy Christmas on the tills or a display that sold out. Close with your availability and a line on why you like the brand. Keep it under 250 words.
Start from our cover letter templates or draft one in seconds with the cover letter generator.
